Irena Z. Tomažin - Cmok v grlu / Lump In the Throat

What is the voice? What is the language? What is listenable? And, last but not least, what is existence? All these questions arise when listening to the album Lump In the Throat by experimental singer Irena Z. Tomažin.
Listening to all the burping, gnawing, lisping, stuttering feels like entering the throat, as if a person finds her/himself in a whale stomach and lives there. The smallness of a body and speech organs make us smaller yet enlarge them. They surround us and undermine our intimate space.
Lump In the Throat raises a big question, from which many small ones grow. It is an authentic artistic artifact, launched into the universe of our being, our humanity that has been constantly articulated in a certain history, implanting or at least being partially implanted into a certain culture and symbolic order. Yet is seems that the voice is a deeper secret, more undefined by a cultural milieu than an instrumental landscape of musical patterns, materials and other features. We are dealing with an instrument-body, the basis of language and of all importance.
