Zvezdana Novaković: Slovena Voices

The singer and harpist Zvezdana Novaković’s debut album rests firmly on the Bulgarian and Balkan folk music and singing traditions. It was recorded in collaboration with thirteen female musical guests from Slovenia and abroad. Her affinity for South Slavic singing styles does not favor the illusion of unchanging traditions, but leaves the door open for her own interpretative possibilities and artistic eloquence.
Different styles of overtone and polyphonic singing Zvezdana studied for three years in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, serve as the album's main theme. Other times they are subtly and metaphorically interwoven with the original compositions. Yet Slovena Voices offers more then just "homage to Bulgaria". It could as well be considered as an anthology of the artist’s "coming of age", a map of encounters with fellow musicians of the world; an echo of her past and present music trails, including the ones appearing on the horizon.
