Big Band Krško at Montreux

Whilst certain bands and musicians on the Slovene music scene are desperately trying to get media attention by posting news items about every single move they make, some important musical achievements go almost unnoticed. Such an achievement is the performance by the Big Band Krško (BB KK) at the world famous and one of the oldest jazz festivals in the world Jazz Montreux.

The  band's performance in Switzerland deserves attention also for its repertoar, which included arrangements of songs by Depeche Mode, also included on the band's album Depeched. Jazz Montreux is known for its diverse programme and its past performances of great jazz musicians (Ella Fitzgerald, Miles Davis, Nina Simone and others) as well as legends of pop, rock and other genres (from Led Zeppelin to today's star Sting). The Slovene Big Band's performance featuring the music of Depeche Mode, one of the greatest pop bands, is quite unique and stands out in the plethora of other performances.

Big Band Krško performed in Montreux on 8 and 9 July at the Music in the Park venue. And how does one get invited to such a festival? »We were invited thanks to our most recent musical project, a Tribute to Depeche Mode, which we had also sent to the festival organizers and received a positive response,« was a somewhat nonshalant answer by conductor Aleš Suša, as if the success of the Band was self evident. The seven songs on their new album Depeched include two instrumental arrangements, while the remaining tracks feature vocals by Miha Nemanič, Jan Jenko, Tadeja Molan and Mate Brodar.
»The reaction of the festival's public was very positive. The 2000-strong audience  at the venue Music in the Park was somewhatt puzzled by the unusual Big Band's programme, but was quickly won over. The programme featured all the tracks from the album Depeched as well as other hits, such as People are People, Stripped, Strangelove, World in My Eyes, Everything Counts and Never Let Me Down Again.«  Bojana Zupančič's arrangement of the song Never Let me Down was premiered at the festival. This performance is an important milestone for the band's more than 30-year career and may open doors to other prestigious music venues and festivals.
