Jure Pukl & Matija Dedić - Hybrid

In creating their new record, the Slovene-Croat jazz duo Jure Pukl and Matija Dedić collaborated with base player Matt Brewer and drummer Johnathan Blake, as well as Melissa Aldana, whose role as additional (tenor) saxophone brought harmonic lucidity.
Hybrid not only brings together musicians of different backgrounds and approaches, but also unites two recognisably unique and different musical expressions, upgrading them to a new compositional and performance level. Predominantly grounded in tradition, the album flirts with modern approaches, which in some instances lead to free jazz. In addition to a well-rounded rythmically structured base line, the interpretative finishing touches are given by dynamic solo performances on the double bass and drums. With the exception of Ornett Coleman's Lonely Woman, a jazz classic, in which Pukl uses a new and different sonority of the bass clarinet, all compositions on the album are authored by both musicians.
The true virtue of this musical adventure lies in its apparent melodiousness and lighthearted tunefulness, offering melodies which seem to stay with us all day.
